What to Set Your Thermostat to While on Vacation

At some point, we all find ourselves needing a break. But, when we take that vacation, we can’t forget to give our ACs in Orlando unit a break, as well. Here are a few tips on how you could keep your unit balanced, neither underworked nor overworked.

  • Summer vacation: During summer vacation, turning up the thermostat a few degrees is a definite way to save some money. You should add four degrees to the temperature you typically set for your home while you are away on vacation. Bumping up the thermostat from 73 to 77 degrees can make a huge difference in your energy bill. Don’t get greedy and set your thermostat too high, though, because this will cause a hike in your bill that will leave your temperature rising. Other than adding onto your bill, overheating your home may damage wall compounds.
  • Winter Vacation: Similar rules apply for winter vacation, except the opposite. To save money, take four degrees off the normal temperature you set your home while away a few days on winter vacation. Do not shut the entire system down, however, because this will cause your system to work harder to bring your house back to a warm temperature.
  • Replace your thermostat: If you would like to save even more money, you can upgrade your thermostat. With a newer thermostat system, you are able to program the temperature in your home remotely with smartphone apps as the temperature changes. If nothing else, a programmable thermostat allows you to enter a new setting before coming home from vacation so you don’t have to come home to an uncomfortably warm or cool home.

Giving your AC unit a break when you and the family take one will also give your wallet a break. You will get to relax in the sauna knowing your bill will not be so strenuous on your pockets.
