When is it Time to Replace Your AC Unit?

For most people, air conditioners are mysterious things: boxes that magically transform hot air into cool air to make our lives more comfortable. But because they are so mysterious, it’s sometimes very difficult to know when a system is in need of replacing. One way to find out is to call Brandon air conditioning service experts All Temp AC and Refrigeration at (813) 630-9400 to have one of our service technicians come over and have a look at your system for you. In the meantime, there are some things you can consider when determining if your current system may need to be replaced:

  • System Age: Is your heat pump/air conditioner more than ten years old? If so, the odds are good that it needs replacing, particularly for people living in a hot climate such as Florida.
  • Performance: If you have one or more of the following problems, you might need to start thinking about getting a new system:
    • Your cooling bills are going up more than average temperatures warrant.
    • Your system requires frequent repairs.
    • Your AC unit has trouble keeping all of the rooms in your house equally chilled, which is a sign of a flagging system. It could also mean you have duct or insulation problems.
    • Humidity problems in your home. Leaky ductwork can cause the air to be too stale in the winter or too moist in the summer.
    • Your home has excessive dust. Leaky ducts take particles and air from attics and blow them into your house.
    • Your heating or cooling system is too loud. You could have a problem with an old duct system or worse, with the indoor coil of your AC unit.
  • Lifestyle: Technology has progressed over the past several years and so have lifestyles. If you are rarely home, for example, and your system doesn’t have a programmable thermostat, you might consider an upgrade. Also, you might want to consider having a contractor test for a Home Energy Yardstick. If it’s below five, you might consider a new system because you are likely paying more for your cooling bill than need be.
