Energy-Saving Tips for Your Commercial Refrigeration

Having a commercial Orlando refrigeration system is imperative if you own a restaurant, food market, or any similar food business in Central Florida. Unfortunately, with as large as these refrigerators must be in order to properly keep your food cool and fresh, they consume large amounts of energy. They’re running nonstop to ensure all your perishables remain edible.

The average commercial refrigerator uses as much as 17,000 kilowatts an hour of electricity, and 38,000 kilowatts an hour are used to keep large freezers running as well. That amount of electricity consumption adds to costly energy bills. Fortunately, the Energy Department has stated that new commercial refrigerators and freezers will be 30% more efficient than they were previously. Aside from the Energy Department’s standards assisting food industry owners, there are other ways businesses can be more efficient in their energy usage.

  • Automatic Adaptive Controls: Anti-sweat heaters should only be used when condensation occurs on the display doors. Adding adaptive controls that will automatically turn this function on and off when this occurs will cut down on energy costs.
  • Inspect Door Gaskets: Older doors with gaskets that keep the cold airtight within a commercial refrigerator can lose their integrity over time. This not only causes your energy bills to rise, but also spoils food which essentially ends up costing owners in two areas.
  • Maintain a Clean System: Clean and dust out the refrigeration unit, specifically paying close attention to the coils. Although it seems tedious, it will provide a better heat transfer for your commercial refrigerator.
  • Improved Airflow: The closer commercial refrigerators are together, the more heat there will be for the heat exchange coils. The hotter these coils get, the more energy they use. This being said, if there is the proper amount of space between refrigerators, plenty of airflow will pass over these heat exchange coils keeping them from heating up too much.
